Waste to Energy

Synergie Environ is one of the UK’s leading Anaerobic Digestion (AD) / Energy from Waste (EFW) and biofuel delivery businesses, we will support you to deliver the full project life-cycle from feasibility through to permitting, construction, handover and optimisation and asset management through operations.

Synergie Environ has delivered a large number for AD and EFW plants, generating gas, electricity and heat, for use by the client or exporting to grid. We are technology agnostic and bring experience to a number of sectors including; food and drink, whisky distilling, pharmaceutical and organic waste recover via pyrolysis.

They can take projects from feasibility, through procurement and detailed design, and ultimately to construction and commissioning, managing and co-ordinating the various contractors on site to deliver the project on behalf of the client.

District Heating

We will support you to develop your heat utilisation roadmap, build business cases and then deliver the net-zero solutions. District heating networks have been identified as an integral step in the decarbonisation strategy for energy-from-waste facilities, and as a use of waste heat under SEPA’s regulatory requirements. We can take projects from feasibility, through procurement and detailed design, and ultimately to construction and commissioning, managing and co-ordinating the various contractors on site to deliver the project on behalf of the client.

Carbon Capture and Utilisation

Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) will play a central part in supporting the low carbon transformation of the UK industrial base to achieve the government net zero ambition. There is the potential for significant capital cost savings for the re-use of oil and gas assets for CCUS projects once they have reached the end of their commercial life for oil and gas extraction. The re-use of existing oil and gas assets will also lower the carbon footprint associated with the construction of new CCUS infrastructure. PD&MS has extensive experience in driving cost reduction in late life and decommissioning operations of oil and gas assets and can offer innovative and cost-effective solutions for CCUS modification projects.

Optimus

Optimus Plus (Aberdeen) is supporting two companies in the development of their innovative direct air capture technology up to pilot plant design maturity. Current commercial direct air capture plants are very energy intensive, as a result the cost of capture is high and the only sustainable way to power these plants is if all the power were to be from renewable sources. Mission Zero and CO2CirculAir have two novel designs to lower the impact of the process and thus reduce the costs of capture and impact of the process to very sustainable levels making carbon capture and usage at point of remote requirement an option or allowing the repurposing of end of production life platform and reuse of depleted wells an alternative option to full decommissioning.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen power is a subject gaining in prominence each day and is becoming an exciting part of the energy transition landscape. Our industry can play a pivotal role in the development of hydrogen power, to help make it one of the main contributors to the goal of a carbon-free economy and we are in a strong position to support both green and blue hydrogen-related projects.

Green hydrogen is created by utilising renewable energy, in the form of electricity, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, while blue hydrogen is extracted from natural gas. Due to the extensive track record PD&MS has in the delivery of complex oil and gas projects for our clients and given the synergies between the sectors, transferring our skill set to cater for hydrogen-driven projects is an extremely attractive aim. The process of using electrolysis to convert water into hydrogen is relatively straightforward, but complexity exists in the storage and transportation of hydrogen – a challenge that our diverse in-house engineering team is well-placed to tackle.

Ports and harbours

With PD&MS’ engineering expertise we have the ability to service ports and harbours through equipment safety cases, equipment and infrastructure maintenance programs incorporating statutory compliance requirements as well as design support for upgrades.

Carbon reduction

Synergie Environ can provide a range of Carbon management & reduction plans to assess baseline for energy consumption and carbon impact, and recommendations for reducing/minimising carbon.

This includes options assessment for on-site low-carbon energy infrastructure, including use of power & heat from waste and feasibility of industrial heat networks as well as the design, construction and operation of energy-from-waste systems including anaerobic digestion which can be used for food/catering waste and effluents and thermal treatment including pyrolysis and gasification. They can also provide auditing of existing waste-streams and options assessment to reduce costs and maximise value recovery.

The Optimus Plus (Aberdeen) Electrical team were tasked with carrying out a detailed study into the technical feasibility and commercial viability of powering the Cambo FPSO via subsea power cable from the Shetland Isles and the Viking Windfarm Substation at Kergord.

Solar

We have used our extensive practical knowledge to deliver expert studies and solutions relating to large-scale solar farm projects, including the location of solar arrays in repurposed real estate made available by plant decommissioning projects.

By integrating our power system delivery experience with our project management, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning skills, PD&MS is able to offer practical and cost-effective solar PV services that cover installations’ full life cycles.

At PD&MS, we’ve often done things differently and taken the road less travelled, but when it comes to the well-being and protection of our people, partners and surroundings, we always play it safe. Our impressive safety record and statistics bear this out: for example, we recently achieved 12 years of collective work without a lost time injury (LTI) incident. That’s not down to luck, it’s the result of a carefully-constructed Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy, involving stringent measures and policies. Yet while we’re proud of our performance in this vital area, we know that there’s no room for complacency.

In terms of safeguarding practices pursued, we’ve successfully introduced a ‘Safer You = Safer Me’ culture, to embed HSE appreciation and make it an inherent part of people’s mindsets throughout the company, including strong support and leadership at all levels.
